Pregnancy and Gum Health - Simple tips for expectant mothers

Pregnancy is a time of significant changes, not just physically but also in aspects of health that might be easy to overlook, like oral hygiene.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the risk of developing gum problems, which, if not managed properly, can affect both maternal and child health.

We spoke to Dr Reena Wadia, a Specialist Periodontist and founder of RW Perio for her advice for expecting mums.

What is Pregnancy Gingivitis?

Pregnancy gingivitis is a form of gum disease that occurs during pregnancy.

Due to hormonal changes (increasing levels of progesterone), your body enhances the rate of blood flow to your gums as well as their sensitivity to plaque bacteria.

The result is that your gums are more prone to inflammation and bleeding.

Fortunately, pregnancy gingivitis typically resolves after the birth of the baby, as hormonal levels begin to stabilise.

However, it’s crucial to manage the condition during pregnancy to prevent it from escalating into more severe forms of gum disease.

The Impact of Morning Sickness on Oral Health

Morning sickness, characterised by nausea and vomiting, is a common pregnancy symptom that can affect your dental health.

Stomach acid from vomiting can coat the teeth and temporarily soften their enamel, making them more vulnerable to erosion.

Here’s an effective approach to dental care during bouts of morning sickness:

  • Avoid brushing immediately: Brushing too soon after vomiting can damage the softened enamel. Instead, wait about an hour before brushing your teeth.

  • Rinse your mouth: After experiencing nausea or vomiting, rinse your mouth with plain water. This simple step helps to remove some of the stomach acids from your teeth and gums, reducing the risk of acid damage.

Simple Steps to Maintain Gum Health During Pregnancy

Adopting a thorough oral hygiene routine is vital during pregnancy not only to combat pregnancy gingivitis but also to maintain overall dental health.

Here are some quick tips to help you keep your gums and teeth healthy:

  1. Regular Brushing: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two full minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be gentle to avoid irritating sensitive gums.

  2. Fluoride Toothpaste: Use toothpaste that contains 1000 to 1500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride. Fluoride helps in fighting tooth decay and strengthening tooth enamel.

  3. Proper Technique: After brushing, spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse immediately. Leaving a little fluoride on your teeth can provide an added layer of protection against decay.

Conclusion

While pregnancy is an exciting time, it's important not to neglect oral health.

Pregnancy gingivitis is manageable and largely preventable with the right care.

Remember to discuss any concerns about your oral health with your dentist and schedule regular check-ups to ensure that both you and your baby have a healthy start.

By following these simple steps, you can maintain good oral hygiene and enjoy a healthier, happier pregnancy.
