What do healthy gums look like?

This blog post is brought to you by the gum disease specialists at RW Perio, a specialist gum disease clinic based in London.

Healthy gums provide the vital foundation for creating your overall smile and here at RW Perio we ensure we use the very latest technology and techniques to achieve this both for the immediate and longer term.

We are seeing a dramatic shift within dentistry directly, with our patients adopting a lifestyle approach with a health-first mindset. A healthy body begins with a healthy mouth which is relevant now more than ever.

So what do healthy gums actually look like?

Healthy gums will appear firm and pink; however, the shade can also vary from one individual to another depending on the skin tone.

Being firm and resilient to the touch is key - it ensures they’re doing their work to hold the teeth in place.

In their natural state, healthy gums should not be swollen or inflamed. They also won’t bleed when you brush and floss and won’t feel sensitive or tender to touch or when eating certain foods.

Healthy gums are pink, firm to touch and don’t bleed when brushing or flossing

Without healthy gums you cannot go on to create your perfect smile with the likes of orthodontics, veneers, bonding etc, as with no strong foundation there simply isn’t any point in investing in anything else.

Unhealthy gums are red, swollen and bleed when brushed

It often surprises people that gum disease is the most common disease in humans, but this can be successfully treated and there are often many factors that contribute to the diagnosis of this, including genetics which can play a part.

When investing in your smile you want the results to last, and the gums are the essential starting point to ensure this will be the case.
