This blog post is brought to you by the gum disease specialists at RW Perio, a specialist gum disease clinic based in London.
The topic of gum (periodontal) disease is often overlooked but remember there is a clear link between oral and your general health.
Gum disease the most common disease in humans which can impact all age groups.
Anyone can get periodontal disease but some people are more susceptible to severe disease than others. This is largely dependent on individual risk factors including:
Suboptimal oral home care habits
Genetics
Smoking
Poorly controlled diabetes
Stress
Immunodeficiency
Nutrition
Medications
Pregnancy.
How does gum disease work?
Gum disease is caused by bacteria that live in the mouth. The bacteria stick to the teeth and if they are not removed regularly will irritate the gums. This disease may destroy the attachment of the gum to the tooth forming a “pocket” between the gums and tooth.
Bacteria can live in the pockets beneath the gum line. The disease may destroy the bone, which supports the teeth, and this may mean that they become loose and eventually fall out.
How do I reverse gum disease?
The initial phase of treatment is usually non-surgical periodontal therapy.
The aims of this treatment are to reduce the depth of/close the pockets and increase the ability to maintain good oral hygiene in the area.
The ‘build-up’ under the gum line and the bacteria within the pockets are then removed and disinfected through a technique called specialist root surface debridement.
An optimal oral hygiene regime is vital for long-term stability:
Brush your teeth twice a day and ensure to clean between your teeth too.
Consider using an electric toothbrush to maximise your cleaning.
Clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss daily.
Aim to visit your dentist regularly for a check-up and any maintenance as needed.
